# Apple Maps and Bing Places: local listings past Google

By [Christopher Abraham](https://christopherabraham.com/about/) · Published October 26, 2026

Local SEO conversations start and end with the Google Business Profile, and for good reason. But every iPhone owner who asks Siri for a nearby locksmith, taps a business in Apple Maps, or opens directions from a text message is reading Apple's data. Every search in Bing, and the local results that Microsoft's products draw from it, reads Bing's. Both listings are free, both take an afternoon, and most of the small businesses I check have claimed neither.

## Apple: the place card

Apple's listing for a business is called a place card. It shows the name, hours, phone, website, photos, and actions such as booking or ordering. Apple describes Business Connect as a free platform for controlling how a business shows up across Apple Maps, Wallet, and other Apple apps. The old businessconnect.apple.com address now forwards to business.apple.com, where Apple has folded the tool into a wider product called Apple Business that also covers devices and email for small companies. The Maps part works the same way: claim the location, prove you run it, and edit the card.

What you can manage on the card:
- Logo, header image, and photos.
- Hours, including special hours for holidays.
- Actions that let people order, reserve, or book from the card.
- Showcases, Apple's term for short promotions and seasonal offers.
- Insights on how people found and used the card.

## Claiming on Apple

Sign in at business.apple.com with an Apple Account, ideally one tied to the business email instead of someone's personal ID. Add the company, search for the location, and claim it. Apple verifies the business before you can edit. For a business with many locations, Apple offers bulk tools and works with listing-management services that push data to it.

Apple Maps has long shown ratings and reviews from partner services such as Yelp alongside its own, so a business with a poor profile on a partner site may see that reflected in Maps. Check what your card shows before assuming it matches Google.

## Bing: Places for Business

Microsoft relaunched Bing Places for Business in October 2025. Management moved to bing.com/forbusiness, existing accounts were moved over automatically, and a recommendation tool now flags missing fields such as photos, hours, and category details. Listings are free and appear in Bing Search and Bing Maps. Search Engine Journal's report on the launch noted that Microsoft plans deeper links to Copilot; I treat that as a plan until Microsoft documents it.

The fastest route is the import from Google. Bing can read an existing Google Business Profile and copy the name, address, hours, and phone. That's a good start only when the Google profile is already correct, because the import copies mistakes as faithfully as facts. Check the category afterward, since Google and Bing don't use the same category lists.

## Why these two matter for AI answers

AI assistants answer local questions from whatever business data their systems can reach. Bing's index feeds a number of them, and Apple's data feeds Siri and Apple Maps on every iPhone. If Google says you close at 6 and Apple says 5, an assistant has two answers to pick between, and a customer may drive across town to a locked door. Consistent data across the three big map providers removes the conflict before any AI system has to resolve it.

## Keep one master record

Keep a single document with the business name exactly as registered, the address or service area, the primary phone number, the website, the hours, and the categories. Every listing gets copied from that record, never from another listing. When something changes, update the record first and then each listing on the same day: Google, Apple, Bing, and then the directories and review sites that matter in your trade.

That same record pays off when a business changes its name or moves, which is when listings drift most. My guide to [changing a business name without losing search](https://christopherabraham.com/guides/business-name-change/) covers that case in detail.

## A quick audit you can do today
- Search for your business in Apple Maps on a phone. Note the hours, phone, website, and category.
- Search for it on bing.com and in Bing Maps. Note the same details.
- Compare both with your Google profile and your website's contact page.
- Claim whichever listing you haven't, and correct every difference.
- Put a reminder in your calendar to recheck all three before each holiday season.

## Questions about Apple and Bing listings

### Does claiming these help my Google rankings?

Not directly. They get you found by people who don't use Google, and they make your business data agree everywhere, which helps every system that compares sources.

### Do I need a paid listing service?

Not for one or a few locations. Both platforms are free to use directly. Services earn their fee when you manage dozens of locations.

### What if someone else already claimed my listing?

Both platforms have a dispute or ownership-request process. Start it from the listing itself and keep proof of the business, such as a utility bill or registration, ready.
