# Topic clusters for AI search, without your pages competing with each other

By [Christopher Abraham](https://christopherabraham.com/about/) · Published October 14, 2026

A topic cluster is one hub page that defines a subject and routes readers, plus a set of pages that each answer one buyer question in full, all linked to each other. AI search rewards the shape because Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode break a question into subtopics and run a separate search for each one. Every subtopic page you publish is another chance to be the page that search returns. The discipline that makes it work is one page per question, and no two pages answering the same one.

## Why the shape suits AI search

Google's documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response. Elizabeth Reid, Google's head of Search, described it when AI Mode launched in May 2025: the system breaks a question into subtopics and runs many queries at once. A buyer's one question becomes a dozen narrower searches behind the scenes.

A single long page that covers everything competes in each of those searches with one URL and a diluted focus. A cluster puts a page with a clear, specific answer in front of each subtopic search. To be eligible as a supporting link, Google's guidance adds, a page only has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet in ordinary search. The cluster changes how many questions you can be the best answer to.

## Start from questions, not keywords

I build a cluster from the questions buyers ask, in their own words. The best sources are the Search Console query report for the pages you already have, the first lines of inbound emails, notes from sales calls, and the open questions in an [AI share of voice question set](https://christopherabraham.com/guides/ai-share-of-voice/). Group the questions by what the buyer is trying to decide. Each group that needs more than a few paragraphs to answer properly becomes a page.

Keyword tools still help with volume and wording, and they come second. A cluster planned from a keyword export tends to produce pages that differ by one modifier and answer the same thing, which is how a site ends up competing with itself.

## One page per question

When two pages on your site answer the same question, search engines have to pick one, and they often alternate between them or choose the one you'd rank lower. Google's canonicalization guidance exists for exact and near duplicates; the softer version, two different pages chasing one intent, gets no such help. The fix is a decision for each pair: merge them and redirect the weaker URL, or rewrite one so it answers a different question.

I enforce this mechanically on my own sites. The script that builds them refuses to publish a page that shares more than 15 percent of its phrasing with another page on the same site, or a sentence of ten words or more that already appears elsewhere. A human editor misses overlap across eighty pages; a check that runs on every build doesn't.

## Build the hub to route, and the spokes to answer

The hub page defines the subject in its first paragraph, says who it's for, and links to every spoke with anchor text that names the question the spoke answers. Google's starter guide asks for exactly that: link text that tells people and Google something about the page it points to. A hub that tries to answer every question itself becomes the long page the cluster was meant to replace.

Each spoke opens with a direct answer in two or three sentences, then supports it. Every section should make sense if it is the only part an AI system lifts. Spokes link back to the hub and to the other spokes a reader would naturally need next, and nowhere else by habit.

## A cluster on this site

My [AI search service page](https://christopherabraham.com/services/ai-search/) is the hub for one cluster. Its spokes each answer one question: whether a site is ready (the [AI search readiness checklist](https://christopherabraham.com/guides/ai-search-checklist/)), how to fix a wrong answer ([correcting AI answers](https://christopherabraham.com/guides/correct-ai-answers/)), how to earn the mentions answers repeat ([earned mentions](https://christopherabraham.com/guides/earned-mentions/)), what [llms.txt](https://christopherabraham.com/guides/llms-txt/) does, and how to [measure share of voice](https://christopherabraham.com/guides/ai-share-of-voice/). None of them answers another's question, and each links back to the hub.

## Check the cluster every quarter

Open Search Console's performance report, filter to the cluster's pages, and look at the queries. When two pages draw impressions for the same query, one of them is drifting into the other's territory. When a page draws queries you never planned for, the buyers are telling you what the next spoke should be. Add it, link it from the hub, and keep the rule of one question per page.

## Where I fit

I plan clusters from real buyer questions, find the pages already competing with each other, and decide what to merge, rewrite, or add. If your site has grown by accretion and you suspect it is splitting its own signals, [send me the domain](https://christopherabraham.com/contact/) and I'll tell you where I would start.

## Let me help you with this

If you'd rather have this done than do it yourself, it's exactly the work I do for clients. Tell me about your site and I'll tell you where I'd start.
